Green Wave Trio Recognized for Academic Excellence

   ​The Tulane Green Wave athletics program has to seek out a specific type of student-athlete that can excel in the classroom in addition to their sport.The level of academic requirements at the university requires a legitimate disciplined athlete.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe efforts of a trio of Green Wave standouts were recognized by the American Conference recently.Tulane men cross country’s Rogerio Amaral, women’s basketball’s Amira Mabry, and women’s swimming and diving’s Andrea Zeebe were named as Scholar-Athletes of the Year by the conference.For Zeebee, she repeats as the winner for her sport.The winners are all chosen by the league’s academic committee, which not only looks at academic credentials, but also the athletic performances across 22 total sports that earn the awards.Starting with Amaral, he transferred from South Carolina and immediately became a trailblazer for the program in his first season. The Coimbra, Portugal, native is pursuing a graduate degree in anatomy. He also earned All-Conference honors in cross country.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAmaral was part of a men’s team that finished as conference runner ups who went on to win the NCAA South Central Regional.It was a significant win; no program other than Texas or Arkansas had ever won the award.Amaral finished 12th individually in that competition with a time of 30:04.3. He earned Men’s USTFCCCA All-Region while also receiving All-Academic Athlete honors.Mabry finishes up her four-year run in New Orleans with a decorated spot in Tulane’s record books. Mabry graduated in May with her second Tulane degree: a master’s in neuroscience.On the court, she was sensational.Mabry became the program’s 33rd player to reach 1,000 career points with 1,083 total.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementShe also notched 500 career rebounds, and finished 17th in the conference’s rebounding leaders with 185 last season.Mabry was consistently earning weekly conference honors as she posted double-figure scoring nights in her final campaign.Zeebe is the reigning swimming and diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year and repeated this season. Zeebe graduated in May with a neuroscience degree.She was also named Swimmer of the Week twice for her work in the pool and medaled in the 800 free relay that helped Tulane finish third at the conference championships.The honors were strong, with the three honorees landing in a four-way tie with East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, and Charlotte for second-most in the league. Rice was the only program to produce more winners with five total.The variety of winners shows how strong academics are across multiple Tulane programs as the standard continues to be set strong.
