The Open Championship Friday live updates, leaderboard: Bryson DeChambeau, others look to catch up to Jackson Suber

By Ryan Young — In News — July 17, 2026

Jackson Suber is leading the British Open, just like everybody expected. The 26-year-old, who has yet to win on the PGA Tour and hadn’t been to Europe before this week, surprised everyone when he posted a 5-under 65 on Thursday to kick off the final major championship of the season. That was enough to give him a one-shot lead over the field overnight at Royal Birkdale.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWe should learn pretty quickly if Suber is able to hang on. He’s off in the early wave on Friday, and there is a big group behind him. Sungjae Im and Daniel Brown each got to 4-under, and Bryson DeChambeau — yes, really — leads the massive group at 3-under.DeChambeau hasn’t made a cut yet at a major in 2026, and the LIV Golf star hadn’t found a way to post a single round under par at a major before Thursday. He’s in a great position to make the weekend, though we’ll see how it goes in the second round.Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler isn’t out of it yet, either. He’s at 2-under, and will go off late on Friday alongside DeChambeau. It’s Rory McIlroy, though, who needs a big second round. McIlroy carded a 2-over 72 on Thursday to drop well out of contention. If he’s not careful, he’ll be the one headed home early. We’ll see how things play out over the next few hours. And with great weather ahead, it should be a very entertaining afternoon.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAll times ET2:30 a.m.: Sami Valimaki, Shaun Norris, Jackson Suber 4:58 a.m.: Cameron Young, Wyndham Clark, Ludvig Åberg 5:09 a.m.: Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Matt Fitzpatrick 9:53 a.m.: Justin Thomas, Alex Noren, Jason Day 10:04 a.m.: Scottie Scheffler, Tyrrell Hatton, Bryson DeChambeau 10:15 a.m.: Jordan Spieth, Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm 10:26 a.m.: Brian Harman, Si Woo Kim, Nick TaylorFriday, July 17 Peacock: 1:30 a.m. – 4 a.m. ETUSA Network: 4 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. ETFollow along with the second round of the British Open with Yahoo Sports.Live1 updatesRyan YoungLet’s run it back at Royal Birkdale.
