Atletico Madrid president shuts down Barcelona’s Julian Alvarez pursuit: ‘Laporta knows where Alvarez will play’

Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez has hit another snag after Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo reaffirmed that the Argentine forward will not be leaving the club. The latest transfer chatter surrounding Barcelona has centered on Alvarez’s future, yet Atletico Madrid continues to reject the idea of a sale, even as Barcelona has already submitted an official bid. The bid remains on the table, with Joan Laporta confirming that an offer had been lodged with Atletico Madrid. Yet with talks failing to produce a breakthrough, the Blaugrana could pivot to other targets if the Madrid club maintains its resistance.
As speculation surrounding the Alvarez transfer grows, Cerezo again made Atletico Madrid’s stance explicit. He publicly ruled out any departure for the striker and even addressed Laporta directly. “Julian Alvarez? He’s an Atletico de Madrid player. Or haven’t you got the message yet?” the club president said. He also referenced his relationship with Laporta, underscoring that there is no doubt about where Julián “Lopez” will play next season. Although Cerezo once more referred to Alvarez by the wrong surname, his message left little ambiguity.
For Barcelona, signing Julian Alvarez remains a top priority this summer, with Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco viewing the Argentina international as the perfect addition to the attack. Laporta has acknowledged Barcelona’s interest in Alvarez, and the bid has kept the play in play for now. Yet Atletico Madrid show no signs of softening their position, even after Alvarez publicly expressed a desire to leave. When asked about those comments, Cerezo stated that the situation had been put behind them and offered a firm reiteration: “We all make mistakes in life. He had a slip-up, but everything can be forgiven. I’ll say it again: Julian Alvarez is an Atletico Madrid player and will remain an Atlético Madrid player.”
Meanwhile, Barcelona have signaled they will not wait indefinitely. Laporta has indicated that the proposal “will not remain valid forever,” suggesting that if talks stall, the Catalan club is prepared to pursue alternative plans. The ongoing saga continues to dominate Barcelona’s transfer agenda this summer, as the club weighs its options and weighs whether to push harder on Alvarez or shift focus to other targets while Atletico Madrid stays firm in its stance. The situation remains fluid, with several variables at play as both clubs navigate a potential transfer in what promises to be a defining summer for Barcelona’s attacking line.
