Jon Jones made headlines again in connection with UFC 329, even though he did not fight at the event itself. Instead, he lent his presence to the corner of his protégé Gable Steveson as Steveson made a successful UFC debut (watch here). The experience of being part of such a major spectacle rekindled Jones’s own itch to compete, reminding fans that the former champion still feels drawn to the octagon. It’s worth noting that not too long ago Jones was publicly pushing to be involved in the UFC White House negotiations, a bid that ultimately stalled and fueled fresh tension between Jones and UFC president Dana White. That public standoff left Jones’s standing with the promotion murky: Was he retired? Would he seek opportunities in another organization?
Recently, Jones offered more concrete input on his future during an interview with Ring Magazine. He indicated that while the door to fighting remains ajar, his current reality is different from the past. “When it comes to me actually fighting anyone, I keep the door open,” Jones said. “I’m in the UFC’s drug testing pool. I get drug tested, blood tested all the time. If I get that calling from maybe the higher powers, then I’m gonna have to answer that call. Right now, I feel like I’m in the right place, which is serving someone else.” He added that as long as he remains within the drug testing framework, the UFC is contractually obligated to offer him a handful of fights each year. Yet he confessed that he hasn’t heard anything concrete from the promotion in some time and that his immediate focus is on family and fatherhood. “Right now, my main focus is being a good dad, a good family man. When I get offered a fight, that’s going to be great. We’ll see how I feel when that time comes,” he remarked.
Jones also reaffirmed a strong, ongoing relationship with Dana White, describing the UFC chief as a “homie for life” despite their disagreements. Taken together, his comments signal his most hopeful and engaged stance on a UFC return since the White House negotiations cooled, suggesting that the door to competition could still be open for “Bones” as he approaches his 39th birthday this weekend. Rumors persist about a potential matchup with Alex Pereira, who reportedly desires a heavyweight opponent around November, raising questions about whether a new chapter might be in the cards for Jones in the near future.
