The Chargers enter the 2026 season with plenty of impressive young talent, yet Omarion Hampton stands out as the player most likely to take a substantial leap. After being selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Hampton flashed the potential that convinced the Chargers he could become their long-term answer at running back. An ankle injury interrupted what looked like a promising rookie campaign, but he returned late in the year and reminded everyone of his physical running style. Still, it was clear he never had the chance to fully establish himself.
Now healthy and entering his second season, the circumstances appear favorable for Hampton to break out. The primary reason is opportunity. The Chargers have invested in their offensive line and are expected to lean on a bruising rushing attack under coach Jim Harbaugh. With Justin Herbert commanding respect from defenses, Hampton should not consistently face stacked boxes. Opposing teams will have to account for Herbert’s arm, which should open favorable running lanes throughout the season and give Hampton more room to operate.
The line itself could be one of the league’s better units. Healthy returns from Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt provide obvious continuity on the edges, while Tyler Biadasz offers stability at center. If that group realizes its potential, Hampton will have ample space to showcase the power and explosiveness that made him one of college football’s standout running backs at North Carolina.
Another significant factor in Hampton’s favor is offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. McDaniel’s offenses have a track record of generating productive rushing attacks through motion, misdirection, and inventive blocking concepts. Hampton may not be a perfect stylistic match for all of McDaniel’s previous runners, but his blend of vision, contact balance, and burst fits well within a scheme designed to create space for a running back. The Chargers have also added blocking support with tight end Charlie Kolar, a move that could further strengthen the ground game.
Perhaps the most encouraging sign is the growing confidence surrounding Hampton. Several analysts have identified him as one of the NFL’s top breakout candidates for 2026, and even fantasy football experts expect him to take a meaningful leap. While buzz around a player doesn’t guarantee production, it does reflect the high regard in which league observers hold his talent as he starts his second season.
Of course, health remains the biggest variable. Hampton’s rookie year was derailed by injury, and availability often marks the line between potential and production. If he can stay healthy for 17 games, there is every reason to believe he can become the centerpiece of the Chargers’ rushing attack. A 1,200-yard season with double-digit touchdowns isn’t out of the question, but more importantly, Hampton has the ability to become the kind of back who keeps defenses honest and eases some of the load on Herbert. That balance—between a powerful, consistent ground game and a threat to break big plays—fits perfectly with Harbaugh’s vision for the offense and could be the driving force behind the Chargers’ 2026 offense.
