Barcelona transfer target reveals desire to play alongside Pau Cubarsi: ‘The ultimate goal’

Barcelona may not sign Ruud Nijstad this summer, but the highly regarded Dutch defender has acknowledged that representing the Blaugrana remains one of his loftiest ambitions. The latest round of Barcelona transfer news has thrust the 18-year-old back into the spotlight after he confirmed the Catalan club’s interest and disclosed his dream of someday forming a center-back partnership with Pau Cubarsi.
It’s worth recalling that Nijstad’s potential move to Barcelona nearly materialized earlier in the year. The left-footed defender had emerged as one of the club’s preferred long-term options, yet financial considerations ultimately halted the deal. In the weeks following the failed transfer, the FC Twente defender admitted that the possibility of joining Barcelona felt genuine, even as he chose to continue his development in the Eredivisie.
Barcelona’s scouting department identified Nijstad as one of the brightest defensive talents in Dutch football. Despite that high regard, FC Twente’s asking price of around €8 million was deemed too steep for a player who would initially be viewed as a long-term investment. Consequently, Nijstad signed a new contract with Twente, extending his stay until 2029.
Reflecting on the decision to stay in the Netherlands, the teenager admitted that he had doubts. “Going abroad was a leap of faith, and PSV was also an option because it’s been the best club in the Netherlands in recent years. I found it really very difficult. I listened above all to the advice of my parents, my agents, my girlfriend, and some of my teammates,” he told SPORT.
Nijstad has already stated that his ultimate objective remains clear: to test his abilities at Barcelona and to one day form a formidable center-back pairing with Cubarsi. Speaking about his ambitions, he said that wearing the Barcelona shirt and partnering with one of the club’s brightest young stars would represent the perfect scenario. “Playing for FC Barcelona and forming a centre-back partnership with Cubarsi would, of course, be the ultimate goal,” he remarked.
For now, Nijstad remains steadfast in his commitment to Twente, insisting that staying with his current club is the best path for his development. “But first I want to continue developing at FC Twente. I still have a great deal to learn here,” he added. The youngster’s focus on growth and readiness to seize future opportunities underscores his professional approach and long-term vision.
As Barcelona continues to monitor Nijstad’s progress, the door remains ajar for a future move. The prospect of Nijstad’s development under strong Dutch coaching, combined with Barcelona’s enduring interest, keeps alive the possibility that he could one day wear the Blaugrana jersey and partner with Cubarsi in a defense that could become a backbone for Barcelona’s ambitions in the coming years. In the meantime, Nijstad’s priority is clear: maximize his growth at Twente, refine his defensive game, and demonstrate that he can meet the high standards required to play for one of Europe’s elite clubs.
