LeBron James jokes about playing for another 24 years despite having the longest NBA career ever

LeBron James has long seemed to be waging a personal war with Father Time, and he remains convinced that he could keep fighting for another two decades. As he prepares to enter his 24th NBA season in 2026-27, he adds another chapter to a career that already holds the record for the most seasons played in the league. If it were up to the 41-year-old superstar, he believes he could still compete on the NBA court for another 24 years.
During a live podcast with Tyrese Haliburton at Fanatics Fest, Haliburton asked James how realistic it would be for him to remain a 10-point scorer in the league after averaging 20-plus points at age 41. “I can average 10 points and be in the league for… a long, long time… 65,” James replied with characteristic confidence. Last season marked Year 23 for the No. 1 pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, with James posting averages of 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds. While it’s unlikely he will continue playing in the NBA beyond one or two more seasons to focus on life after basketball, there’s a plausible argument that he could extend his career even longer if he chose to.
Even at this stage, James remains a force capable of producing All-Star-level numbers and guiding teams to playoff series wins as the primary option. Now that he has settled into a role where he’s more of a secondary option on some nights, there is a theoretical path for him to extend his career by another decade through a combination of savvy management of his minutes, impeccable endurance, and continued elite basketball IQ. In this scenario, his off-court leadership and on-court decision-making would allow him to stay on a roster by merit, even if his athletic gear starts to show the years.
Yet there’s a counterpoint that looms large. No player, however exceptional, can guarantee prolonging mobility to the point of playing five minutes at age 65, let alone scoring 10 points in that hypothetical stretch. What we are witnessing with LeBron is a historic, almost singular battle against time—an ongoing testament to longevity and the capacity of a singular talent to redefine what is possible in a modern league. Still, reality is unyielding: eventually the inexorable march of time catches up with everyone, and even LeBron’s extraordinary will may not be enough to forestall the end.
Even so, the narrative remains compelling. LeBron’s career has defied conventional expectations at every turn, and his insistence on imagining a future in which he remains an active NBA player well into his mid-60s captures the imagination of fans and analysts alike. As the end nears—whether soon or sometime further down the road—the legend of his pursuit of longevity will endure, shaping how future generations think about aging, conditioning, and the limits of athletic endurance in the league.
