Darlington Osuchukwu: Athletic Club seal signing of ex-United talent

Manchester United have implemented significant changes to their youth goalkeeping setup this summer. Earlier this month, a BBC report suggested that Swansea City keeper Kit Margetson is on the verge of joining the Red Devils. The Wales under-21 international is anticipated to be loaned out to an EFL club this season to further his development in senior football.
Additionally, United parted ways with one of their most highly regarded young goalkeepers earlier in the summer. In June, The Peoples Person shared news that Spanish keeper Darlington Osuchukwu had decided to leave Manchester United. The 16-year-old, who stands 6ft 4in, had been a standout for United’s under-16s and had even trained with the first team on several occasions. However, the Gazte Berriak product was keen to return to Spain after moving to Manchester at the age of 13.
According to The Secret Scout, a trusted source for youth football and transfer news, Osuchukwu has since found his next destination. It is understood the former United youngster has agreed to join La Liga side Athletic Club. The Secret Scout posted on X that “Athletic Bilbao have completed the signing of 16-Year-Old Darlington Osuchukwu from Manchester United after his contract ended on 30th of June.” Earlier today, Osuchukwu posted a farewell message on Instagram, writing: “After four unforgettable years at this incredible club, I have made the incredibly difficult decision to move on and embrace a new challenge. This was not a decision my family and I took lightly. While I was grateful to be given the opportunity to continue my journey here, we believe the time is right to begin a new chapter.”
Meanwhile, changes at the senior level in the goalkeeping department are also underway. United have confirmed the signing of Karl Darlow, who arrives at Old Trafford on a free transfer after leaving Leeds United, their bitter rivals. Like Margetson, Darlow is Welsh and is expected to serve as a back-up to Senne Lammens under manager Michael Carrick.
This summer’s reshuffle signals United’s intent to bolster both the development pathway and the senior squad. The departures of promising youth talents such as Osuchukwu underscore a broader strategy of refining the academy’s output while simultaneously strengthening the first-team options through prudent acquisitions. As the club navigates this transitional period, supporters will be watching closely to see how these moves influence the long-term pipeline and the competitive balance within the squad.
