The Chicago White Sox enter the MLB All-Star break in a position few may have expected before the season began: firmly in the postseason conversation.
At 50-45, Chicago has put together a strong first half and remains right in the mix for the American League Central crown. The White Sox also had individual success recognized during All-Star festivities, with Munetaka Murakami, Miguel Vargas and Tristan Peters earning All-Star selections. That combination of team progress and standout performances has helped turn the second half of the season into a meaningful playoff push on the South Side.
Now the biggest question is whether the White Sox can turn their encouraging start into a postseason berth.
According to ESPN’s Bradford Doolittle, Chicago’s playoff chances are essentially a toss-up. ESPN’s projections give the White Sox slightly better than coin-flip odds to reach the postseason, while their chances of winning the AL Central remain below 25 percent.
“Record: 50-45 | Projected final record: 83-79. Division title odds: 21.5% | Playoff odds: 50.3% | Championship odds: 1.3%,” Doolittle projected.
Those numbers paint a clear picture of where the White Sox stand. They are not viewed as a top-tier World Series contender, but they are absolutely in the playoff race. For a team trying to take a major step forward, that is what matters most right now.
Chicago’s 1.3 percent championship odds are modest, but the White Sox do not need to be seen as a favorite in July. Their immediate goal is to secure a postseason spot, whether by winning the division or claiming an American League Wild Card berth. ESPN’s 50.3 percent playoff projection suggests that outcome is very much within reach.
The White Sox currently sit at the top of the AL Central coming out of the All-Star break, though their margin for error is slim. They are tied with the Cleveland Guardians, meaning the division race could shift quickly once play resumes. If Chicago slips from first place, a Wild Card path may still be possible, but that route could be just as competitive.
The Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers are also close enough to make the AL Central one of the more interesting races in baseball during the second half. No team has created enough separation to feel safe, and every series inside the division could carry major playoff implications down the stretch.
That is why the MLB trade deadline could be crucial for the White Sox. Chicago may have a slight edge in the standings right now, but the roster still could use reinforcements if the front office wants to improve those ESPN postseason odds. Adding pitching depth, bullpen help or another reliable bat could make a significant difference in a race that appears likely to remain tight into September.
The White Sox are in a strong position compared to preseason expectations, but they cannot afford to stand still. A 50.3 percent chance to make the playoffs is encouraging, yet it also shows how vulnerable their position is. One hot streak could push Chicago into firmer postseason territory, while one slump could allow Cleveland, Minnesota or Detroit to take control of the division.
Still, White Sox fans likely would have gladly accepted this scenario before Opening Day. Being above .500 at the All-Star break, tied for first place in the AL Central and holding slightly better than even odds to make the playoffs is a meaningful step forward.
ESPN’s projection may not label the White Sox as a powerhouse, but it does confirm that Chicago has a realistic chance to play October baseball. With the second half of the MLB season still ahead, the White Sox have an opportunity to prove they are more than a coin-flip team and turn their promising first half into a postseason berth.
