Just tell guys how it is.”Mayfield went onto explain that when he was notified that he was going to be inactive or released, Wilks and the organization was not straightforward with him.”I was like, ‘Listen, if you want me to ask for my release, I’ll say it, but if you’re going to cut me just tell me that.’ He’s [Wilks] ultimately the one who made that decision, that I wasn’t gonna be active, I wasn’t going to be playing anymore and I know that.”Mayfield did struggle during his time in Carolina, fronting a 1-5 record and a career-low 57.8% completion percentage. But, he didn’t have much time to prepare, and was almost mockingly being used as a scout team defensive tackle in practice.”When you face people that you have, whether a good or bad relationship with, you always want to beat them,” Mayfield added. The Bucs did just that, walking off the Jets with a field goal from Chase McLaughlin as time expired for a 29-27 victory.During the kick, Mayfield was filmed repeating “Come on God, come on Chase,” as he prayed that his team could finish the job.Following the game, Mayfield was asked about the added intensity when playing against head coach Todd Bowles’ former team, to which he responded “I loved it.
