​The Los Angeles Dodgers can potentially expect their closer, Edwin Díaz, to return to the team soon, according to what manager Dave Roberts reported to the media on Wednesday. Since being on the Injured List on April 20 and later having surgery to remove loose bodies in his elbow on April 22, Díaz has been ramping up his rehab appearances through the Dodgers’ farm system. He kicked off his rehab assignment down in Single-A with the Ontario Tower Buzzers on July 11 and struck out six batters across the three innings he recorded. His fastball was lively, and the slider combination looked like the Díaz of years past. The big step of his rehab began on Wednesday when he completed his first appearance of a back-to-back with the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets. He faced three batters on Wednesday and struck out two before giving up a hit. Roberts stated to the media that Díaz would pitch on Wednesday and Thursday to complete the back-to-back trial. Following that, he will rest up on Friday and Saturday before throwing his last rehab outing on Sunday.Roberts believes that the back-to-back test is the most important trial throughout his entire rehab, and the final appearance on Sunday could provide a big exclamation point for a concrete answer. From there, the Dodgers and Roberts will decide whether to activate Díaz on Tuesday when the Dodgers kick off their first home stand of the second half against the Seattle Mariners. In seven appearances thus far, Díaz has recorded four saves and has struck out 10 across six innings.
