​BEREA ― Brownsrookies have already reported. The veterans won’t be too far behind.The Browns will conduct their first on-field training camp practice on July 29. That starts a more than monthlong windup to the opening of the regular season Sept. 13 in Jacksonville.So what do you need to know about the storylines for this training camp, the first under coach Todd Monken? There are a few, some of which you probably could recite on your own.Subscribe to Browns Insider newsletterDeshaun Watson vs. Shedeur Sanders QB competition enters final battleThe offseason program didn’t provide Monken with enough evidence one way or the other to decide who was going to be the Browns’ No. 1 quarterback. So Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders will carry their competition into camp, with no firm deadline ― beyond 1 p.m. Sept. 13 in Jacksonville ― for the head coach to make his decision known publicly. It’s not likely it will take that long, but it does seem the decision won’t be coming in the first two weeks of camp. Both Monken and quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian have indicated they want to see both quarterbacks face live competition, which doesn’t necessarily mean preseason games, but one would guess preseason games will factor into the mix. The guess here is that the Aug. 20 joint practice against the Buffalo Bills will be one of the two quarterbacks’ Waterloo, the moment when he’s finally turned away in his quest to be the opening-day starter.Todd Monken’s training camp could be a culture shock to BrownsAnyone who was around training camp during Kevin Stefanski’s six seasons as Browns coach wouldn’t confuse it for a throwback to Bear Bryant’s Junction Boys days. Granted, the collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association does have a major say in how and how long teams practice in camp. However, it shouldn’t be major news when a team actually conducts full-speed, full-contact drills in camp, as it seemed like it was during that time. Monken’s already established in the offseason program he wants to use as much time as he’s permitted by the CBA to be on the field, and said “veterans days off” were no longer available. Obviously, there is going to be a level of planning and strategy in the way Monken handles his camp practices so that he has a reasonably healthy team to face the Jaguars in the opener. However, the novel concept of needing to practice football in order to play football figures to be the mission statement for Monken’s first camp.Jared Verse vs. Spencer Fano 1-on-1 battles intriguing in multiple waysThe biggest news since the Browns hired Monken happened June 1, when they traded away two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams for Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Verse and draft picks.
