Total stadium attendance hit a record 6.81 million fans, averaging 65,490 per match with a 99.7% occupancy rate.Financially, the expanded 48-team tournament generated around $13 billion in revenue for FIFA. On the pitch, Spain claimed the trophy with a 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina before 80,663 fans at MetLife Stadium.U.S. broadcast viewership alone topped 60 million for the final, proving that hosting the tournament on North American soil delivered unprecedented commercial reach and fan engagement. However, it could all mean nothing if the so-called ‘hype’ doesn’t translate over to the MLS.MLS try to capitalize on the World Cup hypeSports business reporter Ben Strauss has discussed how the MLS is looking to capitalize on the enthusiasm surrounding soccer in the U.S. after the World Cup on ABC News.“There’s a big ad campaign, they dropped tens of millions of dollars. “Thanks, world, we’ll take it from here. Which you’ve probably seen on TV in digital spaces. They did watch parties that were attending by tens of thousands of people. And they’re giving away lots of tickets, so some of the returns on attendance are pretty good.“So that all leads to next year when they are going to flip their calendar next year and try and do a job of competing with the big leagues in Europe.”MLS’s post-World Cup pivot represents its biggest financial and operational gamble since its 1996 launch.Beyond spending tens of millions on national ad campaigns, watch parties, and ticket giveaways, the league is dismantling its 30-year business model. Flipping to a July-to-May European schedule in 2027 aligns MLS with global transfer windows and FIFA international breaks. However, it forces the league into direct competition with dominant North American sports juggernauts like the NFL, college football, and the NBA.Combined with severe winter weather challenges across northern markets, MLS is risking domestic viewership and ticket sales for global credibility.
