​The New Orleans Pelicans were revealed as suitors for Bennedict Mathurin a few days ago with another unknown team also in the mix. That unknown team has now been revealed.NBA insider Marc Stein, who has been on top of this story since the beginning, updated his report on Tuesday night to reveal that the Chicago Bulls are actually the other team that has checked in on Mathurin.As a reminder, Mathurin is a restricted free agent. The Los Angeles Clippers could throw a wrench into the discussions if they either want him back or feel like they can come out on top of a sign-and-trade.The former sixth overall pick has flashed immense scoring ability and athleticism, the same things that got him drafted so high, but he hasn’t really developed his game. Now he is entering his age-24 season and hoping to find a little bit of stability and a new long-term home.Last year, Mathurin posted 17.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game on 43.0/31.5/86.9 shooting splits. It does not appear that the Clippers are worried about keeping him, as they are trying to turn their team in a new direction after Kawhi Leonard, but it would be hard for the Pelicans to simply outbid the Bulls without the assistance of a sign-and-trade. That’s why it definitely matters for New Orleans just how interested Chicago is in the guard.If it were just up to Mathurin to pick between the two, it still wouldn’t be a very straightforward decision. Neither team is really more likely than the other to make a postseason push and both are entering new coaching regimes.The Bulls are the bigger market and do have the better public image right now because they drafted Caleb Wilson, and he was one of the stars of this stacked draft class. There is a very clear vision for the future. The long-term fit could get confusing as the team drafted Dailyn Swain this offseason, who will eventually develop into that starting two guard.The Pelicans, on the other hand, don’t have someone who would fit next to Jeremiah Fears in the long run, but Mathurin probably wouldn’t take precedence over Dejounte Murray right away. New Orleans would offer him a better chance to establish himself as a core player on a team. Chicago would probably be better off with a one-year “prove-it” deal, with a better chance for shots being open.
