At a time when schools are desperate to grab cash in any form or fashion to put together the best roster possible, things such as jerseys and stadiums are no longer sacred.Today’s discussion question is two-fold: will Michigan be the next major program to follow suit and have jersey patches, and are these patches inevitable in all of college football?Michigan has one of the most iconic jerseys in all of sports. The home maize pants in particular are relatively rare in college football, along with the iconic winged helmets. Asking the question “do you want a jersey patch on Michigan jerseys” would be pointless, as I’m sure the response would be a near-unanimous “no.” However, this seems like the easiest of cash grabs for universities.It’s hard for me to imagine Michigan’s athletic department seeing Ohio State and Notre Dame strike deals for north of $15 million and not also wanting a piece of the action. While I don’t see a world where the jersey is covered in ads like some soccer teams and minor league hockey teams, it’s certainly not far-fetched to envision an exclusive partnership deal with a big company. To me, the intrigue isn’t “will Michigan have a jersey patch?” Instead, it is “when will Michigan have a jersey patch, who will it be, and how will it look on the uniform?”Taking things a step further, are jersey patches inevitable in all of college football? The non-Power 4 schools certainly won’t command the same amount of dollars as the Michigan’s of the world, but if they have an opportunity to make some money, it’s not hard to believe they will. NIL plays a major role in college sports at all levels, even if the scale is somewhat reduced.So will Michigan be the next major program to announce a jersey patch?
