​Byron Young is entering his fourth NFL season with a new benchmark in mind, and it arrived in the Los Angeles Rams’ locker room this offseason in the form of Myles Garrett.The Rams acquired Garrett, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year and the NFL’s single-season sack record holder, in an offseason trade that sent Jared Verse to the Cleveland Browns. Young, who paired with Verse to help Los Angeles reach the NFC Championship Game last season, has spent camp treating Garrett as both a locker room neighbor and a mentor while he looks to reach his goals.”I need to get to All-Pro,” Young said, per The Athletic’s Nate Atkins. “I want to be one of those crunch-time situation guys.”Someone like Myles Garrett.”Young is coming off a 12-sack Pro Bowl season, part of 27.5 sacks over his first three years in the league. But he’s after more than reliability now. He’s picking Garrett’s brain on rush plans and pass-rush concepts, asking questions about approach and mentality during meetings and walkthroughs.Garrett, who has 125.5 sacks in nine seasons, has told Young he’s never had a pass-rush rep where he didn’t believe he could get to the quarterback — even against chips, slides and triple teams designed to stop him. Young said internalizing that mindset has been as valuable as any technical adjustment.”He gets chipped and he gets the slide. He gets triple-teamed and he still has the mindset of, ‘I’m going to beat that,'” Young said. “And he still beats that. He always has a plan.”Head coach Sean McVay has also praised Young’s versatility, noting his ability to play multiple techniques along the defensive front.”He can create on his own,” McVay said. “He does a great job on some of the two- and three-man games where he’s a tight wrapper, looper.
