​After making multiple trades during the 2026 NBA Draft, the Detroit Pistons walked away from the two-day talent acquisition event strapped with a new, exciting young point guard in Ebuka Okorie to take some pressure off Cade Cunningham and a shot-swatting former Virginia center in Ugonna Onyenso to help replace Isaiah Stewart’s comprehensive rim protection. The Pistons shuffled around multiple future second-round draft picks in the process, but they laid the groundwork for an offseason that was defined by the purpose of surrounding Cunningham with more perimeter shooting. Shortly thereafter, Detroit brought in Isaiah Joe, John Collins, Taurean Prince and Gary Harris via trade, and all four players can hit the deep ball at an efficient rate at volume. But the first chance for newcomers Okorie and Onyenso to showcase their skills arrived in Las Vegas at the Summer League, and the rookie pair both had frequent bright spots despite their team’s 1-4 exhibition record. “Summer League is like the new season of discovery, assessment, evaluation,” Pistons Summer League coach Steve Scalzi said in the team’s Under The Hood video. “Everyone gets to see a new environment, try new players, new chemistry. Some of these young guys, they’ve never had an NBA back-to-back. They’ve never seen some of these faces in the crowd. It’s super exciting to test them in these moments, and you can put the staff to the test as well. Okorie scored nearly 20 points per game, but he’ll be asked to score on a nightly basis in the NBA, which is where the major increase in regular season games can become a factor for rookies. “The biggest sigh of relief, probably just getting the first Summer League game under my belt,” Okorie said. “Being able to get out on the court with all the guys. It was really fun just playing five-on-five basketball, playing live, full-court, getting up and down. It was really fun, and hopefully next game we’re going to get a win.”In the end, the Pistons were only able to produce a singular Summer League victory, but Okorie did log a seven-steal performance along the way. Okorie has a long 6-7 wingspan for a point guard, and the former Cardinal had the chance to display a bit of his defensive playmaking ability while out in Las Vegas.
