Former SUNY Niagara hurler Matt Barr figuring it out in Twins minor league system

When Matt Barr was drafted by the Minnesota Twins on June 14, 2025, he had 10 days off before signing. He spent that time working out at SUNY Niagara throwing to his best friend and former Thunderwolves teammate Dalton Harper and with coach Matt Clingersmith before heading to Minnesota’s rookie level team in Fort Myers, Florida.Once he was signed, it took a while for him to play in his first professional game thanks to the Florida Complex League season ending shortly after the draft and then a stress fracture in his right arm suffered during spring training, delaying his debut until May 25.It was a one inning performance where he gave up one run against the FCL Pirates. Since then he has worked hard to pitch well and now has been called up to the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, the Twins low-A level team.Through two starts with the Mighty Mussels, Barr has a 6.75 ERA with seven strikeouts and three walks. After a shaky first start at the A-level in which he gave up five runs in 2 and 2/3 innings, Barr responded by going four innings of shutout baseball while giving up three hits and striking out five hitters Friday. In his minor league career, Barr has an 0-1 record with a 5.96 ERA across 10 games while striking out 26 hitters and walking 19 hitters. He also has a .221 batting average against and a 1.68 WHIP.It was an adjustment that saw him have to get used to a new level of competition against other high level players. He has had to work on his already-existing arsenal of a two-seam fastball, a four-seam fastball and a slider while adding a knuckle curveball. One thing that is helping him get adjusted though is keeping some of his routines the same throughout his career. Since he was in high school, the Cheektowaga native has been singing “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield to himself in an effort to stay loose on the mound and not get into his head.“I think it’s gone pretty good,” Barr said. “I think it’s been rocky, injury in spring training coming back but ever since then rehab’s been going good, complex league’s been good, just trying to get the velo up, get the command better. Other than that, I feel like it’s been pretty good so far.”The stress fracture in his throwing arm came from overuse and it was a major learning experience in his early minor league career. He had to learn to take it easy on light days and progressively ramp up his workouts as the week went along. The injury was the first major injury that he suffered to his throwing arm and the rehab required him to work hard to get back to where he was before it happened. He had to work with the Twins medical staff while he was on the shelf to get back to where he was before.According to the National Library of Medicine, those with similar injuries to Barr should stop doing weight bearing activities with their impacted arm for four to six weeks before beginning physical therapy if the symptoms have gone away. And then the athlete can start throwing off flat ground bef
