​On Saturday, the Athletics broke both their own nine-game losing streak and the Boston Red Sox’s nine-game winning streak with a 7-3 road win. Gage Jump picked up his fifth win of the season, while Jake Bennett picked up his fifth loss. Jump is now 5-7 and Bennett is 7-5.The last A’s win was also started by Jump, against Bennett and the Red Sox on July 28 in Sacramento. That just so happened to be the last game that Boston had lost. Now the A’s will be after another win on Sunday that would snap quite a few longstanding streaks. The first would be putting to rest the streak of consecutive series without a series win. The A’s have not simply won two of three from an opponent since they were in Las Vegas and beat the Colorado Rockies from June 12-14. That streak currently stands at 12 straight series, which is the third-longest in franchise history. The two longest were in 1916 when they dropped 17 straight series from May 26-Aug. 10 and 12 straight from Aug. 17-Sept. 30. While they have lost 12 straight series, they did come close with a split of a four-game set with the Angels in Sacramento in June shortly after the Rockies wins. The streak of 14 consecutive series without a win is the A’s longest since May 22-July 26, 1979 when they went 0-19-1 over a 20-series stretch.The other streak they’ll be looking to break — or extend — is the winning streak. The A’s haven’t won back-to-back games since June 25 against the San Francisco Giants and June 26 against the Angels. The club is 6-29 since that date, the fewest wins in that span. While the Red Sox have gone 30-6 in that same stretch of games, two of those losses have already come against the Athletics, and this will be Boston’s first time facing the team’s most consistent starter all season, J.T. Ginn. Ginn is 8-6 on the season with a 3.51 ERA. Given the A’s team ERA of 5.45 entering play on Sunday, it’s easy to see why Ginn stands out in the rotation. In two starts since the break, the right-hander has gone 1-0 and holds a 2.19 ERA across 12 ⅓ innings.While the goal of the club is to continue developing the young players the rest of the season, they also want to win as many games as possible the rest of the way to set a tone in that clubhouse for 2027. A series win for the first time in well over a month against the hottest team in baseball would be the tone shift they’re after.
