​Mercedes technical director James Allison has opened up about the biggest “dilemma” every Formula 1 team is forced to face at some point during the season.The Brackley-based outfit has enjoyed a dominant campaign so far, claiming eight victories from the opening 11 races and confirming the superiority many expected under the new regulations. However, that success has been tempered by a number of reliability issues, which have cost both Antonelli and Russell significant points compared to what their performance suggested was possible.Allison outlines the ‘dilemma’ every F1 team must confrontSpeaking on the NU Silver Radio Show, Allison highlighted one of the key strategic challenges teams face over the course of a Formula 1 season: balancing the pursuit of immediate gains with preparations for the following year. With rivals continuing to bring substantial improvements to their cars, committing resources to the next project too soon could prove costly and leave a team exposed as the championship reaches its closing stages.“Every Formula 1 team always faces the dilemma of when should you switch off your efforts on the current car and invest in next year. And when the development rate is as steep as it seemingly continues to be, that decision gets more difficult because if you switch off too early and your competitors continue to develop at a quarter of a second a month, then the world can get a bit itchy in the final third of the season or whatever.“Our job is to try to judge that switch-off point correctly and to make sure that we keep performance coming to the track at a rate that is going to allow us to, on average, stay with our noses in front of this sort of leapfrogging that we were talking about a few minutes ago.”Allison remains confident that Mercedes can maintain its advantage, pointing to encouraging developments already produced in the wind tunnel and further upgrades still waiting to reach the car. And I think that there’s a strong amount of performance available there, and we’ve got a certain amount of points on the board already.”However, outright pace is not Mercedes’ only priority for the second half of the season. Allison stressed the importance of introducing the planned developments effectively while also delivering cleaner race weekends.
