New York Giants’ WR Battle Could Be Taking Shocking Turn

By admin — In News — August 16, 2026

The New York Giants entered training camp with five stone-cold locks at wide receiver: Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin III and Malachi Fields. That left likely one slot remaining, and it appeared that Odell Beckham Jr. and JuJu Smith-Schuster were duking it out for that last job. However, Smith-Schuster has been inhibited by a knee issue this summer and seems to have fallen off the radar, which left Beckham as the favorite.Fourth-year receiver Jalin Hyatt has made a push with a strong camp, as well, but he missed the preseason opener with an ankle injury. That could not be good for his chances. Neither is his first three years of NFL tape. So, the opening seems like Beckham’s to lose, right?Well, not so fast.Braxton Berrios was signed in free agency the same day as Beckham and Smith-Schuster, and while he doesn’t really have much of a chance to outproduce either player as a receiver, he does offer one unique attribute: special-teams prowess.New York Giants wide receiver Braxton Berrios. Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images.Berrios has always been a terrific returner, and he was given punt return duties during the Giants’ first preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings.Unless New York ends up keeping seven wide outs (which is possible), it could be Berrios — not Smith-Schuster or Hyatt — who represents the biggest threat to Beckham for a spot on the 53-man roster.Berrios corralled a pair of punts for 30 yards on Saturday, and it’s worth noting that he secured a First-Team All-Pro selection as a special teamer for the Jets in 2021.The 30-year-old doesn’t offer much upside offensively. Since entering the NFL in 2019, he has amassed a grand total of 140 catches for 1,360 yards and six touchdowns. He has never achieved 500 receiving yards in a single campaign. But special teams matter, and with Gunner Olszewski out for the season, New York may feel it needs a proven weapon back there.Would the Giants keep seven receivers? Maybe, but then you’re removing a spot from somewhere else. I’m not sure John Harbaugh would do that. It’s entirely possible that Berrios could beat out Beckham for that last slot because of his one important skill, and it would certainly be a big surprise.
