Liam Delap Gives Newcastle Hope… But Chelsea Sets Unreasonable Asking Price

(Photo by Darren Walsh/Chelsea FC via Getty Images) | Chelsea FC via Getty Images Newcastle United has no shortage of areas to address before the transfer window closes, and adding another forward seems to remain under consideration as Matthias Jaissle applies the final touches to his rebuilt Magpies.Chelsea striker Liam Delap has emerged as one of the more attainable options, with his future at Stamford Bridge seemingly decided only one year after the Blues paid Ipswich Town £30 million (€35 million) for him and with the forward determined to stay in the Premier League next season.Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reported on Tuesday that Delap is “open” to joining Newcastle and that a move to St. James’ Park “would appeal” to the 23-year-old, who wants to remain in England’s top-flight division.“Chelsea striker Liam Delap is ‘open’ to the idea of a move to Newcastle United,” O’Rourke reported. “Sources have indicated that a move to St James’ Park would appeal to Delap, and he would not be put off by the existing competition in the Newcastle squad.”That follows TransferFeed’s report that “Liam Delap is hoping that Newcastle will formalise their interest” by submitting a bid to Chelsea, suggesting the striker himself would welcome Newcastle turning its long-standing interest into an actual bid.The problem is Chelsea’s nonsensical valuation of the striker.After spending £30 million on the former Ipswich goalscorer, O’Rourke reported that Chelsea is now demanding as much as £50 million (€58 million) for Delap, despite the lad scoring just once across 28 Premier League appearances last season.“The ability to agree a fee with Chelsea is currently providing a ‘sticking point’ for all three potential suitors,” O’Rourke reported. “Newcastle and Delap are both keen to make a move to the North East happen, but it may depend on whether Chelsea are willing to budge from their lofty demands.”Everton and Nottingham Forest are also interested, which might foster a bidding war, but O’Rourke described Newcastle as a “firm part of the race” and reiterated that the Magpies’ interest predates Delap’s move to Chelsea, as they whiffed and couldn’t land him last summer as Delap chose the Blues instead.The reported £50 million demand is also a significant change from prior reporting suggesting Chelsea could simply seek to recoup its £30 million investment.Would you go anywhere near £50 million for Delap, or should Newcastle walk away unless Chelsea dramatically lowers its demands?
