Long-time depth player gets reps with Colts starters in joint practice

After Tyler Warren exited Wednesday’s joint practice with an injury, the Indianapolis Colts called on Will Mallory to help shoulder some of the tight end responsibilities with the first-team offense.According to Jake Arthur of Roundtable Sports, Mallory caught one pass from Daniel Jones. He also continued to see work with the second-team offense, catching another pass from Riley Leonard. JJ Stankevitz of Colts.com also noted Mallory picking up a “chunk gain” on a catch from Anthony Richardson.Wednesday’s practice was the latest development in what seems to be a surge for playing time by Mallory. In the preseason opener, Mallory led the team in receiving, hauling in six receptions for 80 yards. He had put together a string of good practices before that as well.Mallory’s first three NFL seasons have been quite quiet, but it’s getting to the point this summer where Shane Steichen needs to be more deliberate in getting Mallory opportunities in-season.While Warren will continue to lead the way at tight end, Mallory can add another pass-catching presence to the offense when in 12 personnel, which differs from the blocking-heavy presence that Mo Alie-Cox and Drew Ogletree offer. This article originally appeared on Colts Wire: Long-time depth player gets reps with Colts starters in joint practice
