​WESTFIELD — Laurie Canter of the Majesticks Golf Club sits atop the leaderboard after Day 1 of LIV Golf Indianapolis at Chatham Hills.Canter shot an 8-under par 62, sinking nine birdies and hitting the fairway 13 out of 14 times. Canter helped the Majesticks shoot a combined 17-under-par, giving the team a two-shot lead over Ripper GC and Legion XIII.Cameron Smith (Ripper GC) and Richard T. Lee (Wild Card) are tied for second place at 7-under par.The play on the course was just one of the hot topics surrounding LIV’s final event of the season. With the tour facing financial uncertainty, buy-in from the top names of the tour could impact its future. One of the tour’s biggest and most polarizing names, Bryson DeChambeau, had a strong Day 1 finishing 5-under par. Despite his strong round, DeChambeau said it’s difficult quieting the outside noise and focusing on the round at hand.”It’s tough. It’s not easy,” DeChambeau said during a TV interview after his round. “We definitely have a lot against us. But I think behind the scenes we’ve got a lot of people that are working hard to make this possible for not only all the players that are out here but all the fans that have come out to these events and the economic impact that we’ve made in all these places, whether it’s South Africa, here in Indy or Australia, numerous places across the world, the UK, all the different places we’ve been in the U.S. Even Nashville when we played a few years ago was unbelievable.”I think we just have a bit of a responsibility to continue to show this. If it works, it works; awesome. If it doesn’t, we’ll figure things out. Time will move on, and I would say that time heals things. I hope people can see that we actually bring value to the game of golf. My wish is that people give us one more shot and be open minded.”Wednesday, LIV CEO Scott O’Neil said he was optimistic about the tour’s future while admitting that things need to change moving forward.South Guards GC golfer Dean Burmester echoed a similar sentiment, saying the players had a positive meeting with the potential investors and his fellow golfers have to make their own decisions about whether to remain a part of the tour.”I think everybody has the right to make their own decision,” Burmester said. “I think once you know the facts, then you can make an informed decision, and I don’t think — whether you’re on this side or that side, I don’t think anybody can think badly of anybody else.”I think coming here, that certainly happened from that side, and a lot of guys got given a lot of stick for coming over here. I don’t think we’re going to do it to our own guys. If they want to go back, if certain people do want to go back, if that does happen, then that’s their decision and they can do it. But for me, I feel like I’ve got to focus on what I want to do and what I can do in the game of golf and the best thing I can do for my family.
