Drive rally past Winston-Salem

   ​GREENVILLE, S.C. –  The Greenville Drive ended up on top in an alternating battle on Thursday night, taking command of the series in an 8-7 win versus the Winston-Salem Dash. The Drive improves to 26-25, while the Dash falls to 25-25 in the second-half standings. Greenville is now second place behind Bowling Green.Three straight singles for the Drive loaded the bases for Maximus Martin, who took advantage by smacking a two-run double to right, opening the scoring. Ronny Hernandez drove in another run on a sacrifice fly for a three-run first inning, giving Greenville the lead.Jason Gilman returned to the mound in the second and paid for a leadoff walk after a wild pitch placed the Dash on the board, 3-1. An RBI from Isaiah Jackson got the run right back, extending Greenville’s lead to three. A Nick McLain single brought home a second run for the Dash in the fourth. Juiced bases then became a concern, marking the end for Gilman. Luic Cohen took over on the mound, giving up a sacrifice fly to trim the lead to one before escaping the jam with a frame-ending strikeout. Winston-Salem ended up snatching the rug from under the Drive, jumping ahead as a result of a three-run sixth. A base hit from Ely Brown brought the tying run across, and a two-run double for Kyle Lodsie made it 6-4. Trennor O’Donnor, who came in for Cohen, held the Dash at six in the seventh. Solo homers from Luke Heyman and Martin started the game from scratch, tying it 6-6 before the final two innings. However, it was short-lived. A leadoff single put a runner on for Lodise, tagging in another on a sac-fly to retake the lead, 7-6. It was one of those games where fans sat at the edge of their seats, watching Stanley Tucker tie things up again with an RBI double in the eighth. Jackson came up big for the Drive with a sac-fly, snatching the lead again, 8-7. A 1-2-3 inning for O’Donnell secured a close victory for the Drive, taking two wins in a row before heading into the final three games.Ten hits for Greenville in game three. Heyman had a 3-for-4 night with a few runs scored and a homer. Jackson went 2-for-4, scored a run, and now has 61 RBIs on the season. Martin led the Drive with three RBIs in tonight’s game, going 3-for-5 with his home run and a run scored. Dash finished with eight hits on Thursday. Ely Brown and McLain had a pair. Lodise anchored the Dash with three RBIs.Winston-Salem threw six pitchers tonight. Aric McAtee took the loss, surrendering the final two runs that lost the lead for the Dash in the eighth.
