​The Tampa Bay Rays have been one of the best teams in baseball this season, but Tuesday night’s 4-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers showed one of the biggest concerns this team still has.The bottom of the lineup has to be better.Tampa Bay only picked up five hits in the loss, but the biggest opportunity came in the fourth inning when the Rays had a chance to completely change the game.Junior Caminero started things off with a single before Liam Hicks and Cedric Mullins both walked to load the bases. Jonny DeLuca then picked up an infield single that scored Caminero and gave Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead.The Rays still had the bases loaded with a chance to do some serious damage.Instead, they came away with nothing else.Richie Palacios struck out before Taylor Walls grounded out to end the inning, allowing the Tigers to escape only down one run.That became even more frustrating as the game went along.The Rays’ 7-8-9 hitters failed to record a hit Tuesday night, and it’s a weakness that Tampa Bay might just have to live with for the rest of the season.Of course, the top of the lineup deserves some blame as well.Yandy Diaz and Jonathan Aranda combined to go 0-for-7, while Chandler Simpson went hitless and saw his 15-game hitting streak come to an end.However, those are players who have consistently produced for Tampa Bay this season. Diaz is hitting over .300, Aranda has been one of the Rays’ better hitters over the last two seasons, and Simpson is hitting .308 on the year.The bigger concern is what happens when those players don’t produce.Who picks them up?That answer wasn’t there Tuesday night.And although you still lead the New York Yankees by 3.5 games in the American League East Division, every opportunity wasted, like Tuesday night’s loss, is one more opportunity you miss out on pulling away from a team trying to figure it out. The Boston Red Sox are also nipping at the heels of the division lead, as they now only trail by 5 games after winning once again on Tuesday, their fifth in a row. Tampa Bay has already tried to improve the lineup, including adding Liam Hicks at the MLB trade deadline, and although that has worked quite well, there isn’t another major addition coming to save the bottom of the order. At this point, the Rays pretty much are what they are.That’s what makes nights like Tuesday a little more concerning as the postseason gets closer.The Rays have proven they can compete with anyone this season, and they remain in control of the American League East. But if Tampa Bay eventually falls short in October, a game like this could be the reason why.A big offensive show on Wednesday to close out the series against the Tigers would mean a ton for the momentum and confidence of this team as they prepare to head into a very important September.
