​When a team wins 12 games and a Power Four conference championship, what often happens next is other teams will want to steal some of the formula. The interlopers can go to a coaching clinic and take notes — or just take one of the coaches themselves.It happened this off-season with the Texas Tech football program. Rob Greene was a coach at least two other FBS programs wanted. As safeties coach, he wasn’t necessarily the architect of the Tech defense, but he’s a right-hand man for the guy who is: defensive coordinator Shiel Wood.If you can’t hire Wood, hire his lieutenant. Both played at Wofford College in South Carolina, and they were on the same Wofford coaching staff in 2017. They reunited at Tulane in 2023, and after McGuire hired Wood in December 2024, Wood hired Greene a month later.”Rob’s one of the best teachers of the game I’ve been around,” McGuire said. “Cole Wisniewski [a Tech starting safety in 2025] reminds me of that a lot whenever he talks about our young safeties. He’ll always say, ‘Coach Greene will get ’em right. He’s the best I’ve ever been around.'”So, this offseason, to keep Greene in scarlet and black, Tech gave him a raise and a promotion to co-defensive coordinator.”I think the work he puts in has gotten him to that position,” Tech linebacker John Curry said, “but also at the same time, when I congratulated him on it, he (replied), ‘I’m still the same guy. I’m still the same coach. Like Wood, he’s a young defensive strategist with roots as an offensive skill-position player. He played quarterback and wide receiver in high school, winning a South Carolina state championship, and played wide receiver all through college — from 2009-13 at Wofford and in 2014 at Division II North Greenville.Two years later, he landed at Pittsburgh as a graduate assistant on the defensive side.
