They drew 2-2 with Burnley on the opening day after leading 2-0, and then suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic last weekend.Both sides featured in the second round of the Carabao Cup in midweek, but enjoyed contrasting results, with Watford losing 5-0 while West Ham secured a convincing 4-1 victory.The first chance of the game fell to Amin Nabizada of Watford, who cut inside onto his right foot, but couldn’t find the far corner.Watford’s early pressure paid off as, with just under 20 minutes, they took the lead thanks to Nabizada. The winger’s audacious curling effort looped over Hermansen and into the back of the net.The Hornets almost doubled their lead instantly after numerous attempts in quick succession, but a block from Max Kilman and a save from Hermansen kept the score at 1-0.After going behind, the visitors looked to hit back and tried their luck through Mohamadou Kanté, who fired just over after a well-worked move.Minutes later, the visitors did respond, finding an equaliser. Taty Castellanos’ persistent pressure forced Kévin Keben to lose the ball inside the Watford box, where the striker then knocked it into the six-yard box and forced Matthew Pollock to turn it into his own net, making it 1-1 going into the break.West Ham started the second half on the front foot, with Bowen and Arne Engels both going close from distance. The Hammers captain saw his effort comfortably saved by Federico Ravaglia, while Engels’ strike flew narrowly wide of the post.Despite West Ham’s second-half dominance, Watford continued to show the visitors how dangerous they could be on the counter-attack as Iker Bravo almost gave the Hornets the lead after a fast break.Neither side could find a winner, and West Ham’s struggles continued.
