​Aug. 29—SHENANDOAH — At the opening cross country meet of the season, the Panther girls came away with a third-place finish, defeating Shenandoah, Tri-Center and AHSTW.Winning the meet was Treynor, scoring 40; Harlan scored 44.The Panthers were led by senior Reese Strunk who ran a 21:54.57, just faster than her time of 21:59.59 at this race last year.The next four runners are all new to this team as Strunk leads a team much younger than herself.Harper Wilson, an eighth grader who has bumped up to perform on the high school team, ran 22:57.05 for an 11th-place finish. Freshman Ruby Carroll was next at 14th place in 23:17.19.Indie Sorensen, another Creston freshman, came in next at 24:04.48, finishing 18th. All four girls earned medals — three of them taking their first high school medals in their debut performances.Rounding out scoring for Creston was Riley Kinsella, a freshman who ran 26:35.09 for 36th place. Creston’s last varsity runner was Eva Chesnut who placed 43rd in 28:16.49.The Panthers return to action today in Glenwood where they will get a look at six conference teams — Atlantic, Clarinda, Harlan, Kuemper Catholic, St. Albert and the hosting Rams.Red Oak and Shenandoah will also compete but are no longer members of the Hawkeye 10.
