Winners of 10 of their last 14 games, the Yankees start a six-game West Coast road trip Monday night at Anaheim. Still dealing with right knee inflammation and soreness, rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr. is not in the Yankees’ lineup for a second straight day.In taking three of four games against the rival Red Sox this past weekend, Yankees pitching limited Boston to nine runs across 36 innings, while claiming the season series. On Monday night, Aaron Boone gives the ball to rookie right-hander Elmer Rodriguez (0-2, 4.70), coming off the best of his five MLB starts in last Wednesday’s 9-3 win over Houston. Rodriguez is matched up against Angels’ right-hander Walbert Urena (8-9, 2.94), making his first appearance against the Yankees. Back in April, the Yanks (78-59) and Angels (52-85) split a four-game series at Yankee Stadium. Earlier Monday, the Yankees – in a continuing effort to bolster their bullpen – claimed right-handed reliever John Schreiber off waivers from the Kansas City Royals.More of a groundball pitcher, Schreiber relies mainly on the four-seamer, sweeper and sinker, and also has a cutter and changeup in his arsenal. The 6-foot-2, 224-pound Schreiber, 32, has a career 3.65 ERA in parts of eight seasons with the Tigers, Red Sox and Royals. In 55 appearances for Kansas City this season, Schreiber has also posted a 3.65 ERA, with 36 strikeouts and 22 walks in 49.1 innings. He last pitched on Aug. 29.In recent days, the Yankees have added veteran former All-Star starter Michael Fulmer and 2024 AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil to their bullpen, having lost setup man Fernando Cruz to a partial UCL tear. Veteran right-handed reliever Justin Topa, designated for assignment by the Yanks, elected free agency Monday in lieu of being outrighted to Triple-A. Coming back from Tommy John surgery and preparing as a reliever, right-hander Clarke Schmidt is scheduled to make his second minor league rehab appearance on Wednesday. Here is the Yankees’ Monday night lineup: Ben Rice, DHCody Bellinger, LFLuis Garcia Jr., 1BAmed Rosario, 3BTrent Grisham, CFJazz Chisholm Jr., 2BSpencer Jones, RFJose Caballero, SSAustin Wells, CThis article originally appeared on NorthJersey.com: Is George Lombard Jr. playing?
