​The San Diego Padres are neck-and-neck with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final National League Wild Card spot, so the club is bolstering its roster for a push at the postseason.Entering Tuesday, San Diego and Arizona both share a record of 73-65, tied for the third and final WC spot in the NL.With under a month to go in the regular season, the Padres need to be firing on all cylinders.In an attempt to do so, the club is taking advantage of the roster expansion that takes effect on Tuesday, Sept. 1 by calling up their top prospect.San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee reported late Monday night that catcher Ethan Salas will finally be getting called up to the majors.The 20-year-old hit .296 with 31 extra-base hits including 10 home runs, 61 RBIs and a .822 OPS in 96 games between the Double-A San Antonio Missions and Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas this season.Salas ranked No. 23 on MLB Pipeline’s most recent Top 100 Prospect list and is No. 1 in the Padres’ organization.The move correlates to Major League Baseball’s roster expansion, which allows clubs to expand their regular season major league talent from 26 to 28.The catcher now has an opportunity to aid the Padres in their run at a postseason berth, while getting experience playing at the highest level in baseball for the first time in his young career.On that note, if and when Salas plays in his first MLB game, he’d be the youngest backstop since 1991.However, it’s too early to tell when he will finally slide in at catcher.With Freddy Fermin and Luis Campusano already at the Padres’ disposal, skipper Craig Stammen has plenty of talent behind the plate to choose from.The call up of one of the most exciting prospects in MLB comes in at a great time for San Diego.The Padres host the New York Yankees at the tail end of this week and also face the Los Angeles Dodgers and Diamondbacks at the end of September.Despite being tied with the Diamondbacks entering Tuesday, there’s a long road ahead to reach October baseball.Neither the front office nor Stammen has yet disclosed what Salas’ usage will look like in this final month, but it’s not unreasonable to assume he’ll get a fair shot at making his mark on this team.There will be another call-up with the aforementioned roster expansion, so be sure to follow Roundtable’s Padres’ site to ensure you don’t miss when that news comes out.
