​As the Philadelphia Eagles prepare for the first game of the season, the biggest question remains: what will they do to replace AJ Brown’s production? I think one thing that people are forgetting is that the Eagles not only have to replace Brown’s production with DeVonta Smith, but they also need to replace Smith’s production. Smith is going to be the WR1, and rightfully so. He has a real opportunity to become one of the best players in the NFL.At the same time, having somebody fill in for that WR2 role won’t be an easy task. Smith has arguably been the best WR2 in all of football since entering the league, though there are multiple players in Philadelphia’s wide receiver room who could fit what it is looking to do. At the top of that list is hopefully Makai Lemon, the star wide receiver from the University of Southern California.While Lemon looked very good in college, some haven’t been too happy with what he’s done throughout the early stages of training camp and the preseason. Recently looking at that, one Philadelphia writer believes that he wouldn’t even play him a whole lot, and he needs more time to figure some things out in the league.“Well, I can only speak for myself here, not what anyone else might be saying, but I am definitely not pushing the idea that the team should be pressuring Lemon to fill the gap immediately. “Personally, I think he could probably use more time to ease in. As for Goedert, I’m not projecting a big bump in production, (a) because I think he had a rare season in 2025 when he didn’t get hurt, and I believe his durability should still be a concern; and (b) I believe he is in decline,” Jimmy Kempski wrote.I don’t necessarily disagree with what Kempski is getting at here, but I also think it’s important to recognize that most players who come in after college have to find their footing in the NFL. Just because Lemon was a first-round pick and somebody who dominated the college football world doesn’t mean that changes.Still, the Eagles obviously hope he can come in and make a nice-sized impact for this organization, so it’ll be interesting to see which direction they want to take and how he can fit into a role that helps replace Smith’s and Brown’s production in a different way.
