​BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — For the second consecutive night, the Greenville Drive saw a late-inning battle end in heartbreak.Jhon Diaz delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning Friday night, lifting the Bowling Green Hot Rods to a 3-2 victory over the Drive at Bowling Green Ballpark. The loss, combined with the Winston-Salem Dash’s victory over the Rome Emperors, officially eliminated Greenville from contention for the South Atlantic League playoffs.Greenville and Bowling Green were deadlocked at 2-2 from the third inning until Diaz’s game-winning hit in extras.The Hot Rods struck first in the bottom of the opening inning. Brendan Summerhill singled with one out before Ryan Cermak connected on a two-run homer to left-center off Greenville starter Yordanny Monegro, quickly putting Bowling Green in front, 2-0.The Drive answered with two runs in the third. Stanley Tucker opened the frame by blasting his third home run of the season to right-center, cutting the deficit in half. Jake Schaffner followed two batters later with a double before Owen Hull singled to put runners at the corners. Gerardo Rodriguez then lined an RBI single to center, scoring Schaffner and tying the game at 2-2.From there, Greenville’s pitching staff kept the Hot Rods off the scoreboard for six consecutive innings.Shea Sprague was outstanding in relief of Monegro, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing five hits and striking out seven without issuing a walk. He worked out of several jams, including a bases-loaded situation in the sixth when he struck out Ricardo Gonzalez and retired Diaz on a line drive to right.Aaron Nixon took over with two runners aboard and nobody out in the eighth and escaped without allowing a run. After loading the bases with a hit batter, Nixon induced a force play at the plate before striking out Diaz and retiring Larry Martinez to preserve the tie.Greenville had an opportunity to take the lead in the ninth when Skylar King doubled with one out, but the threat ended when Tucker’s fly ball to right turned into an inning-ending double play.The Drive had another chance in the top of the 10th. With Tucker beginning the inning at second under the extra-inning rule, Givian Sirvania’s lineout moved him to third. Schaffner then hit a ground ball to second, but Tucker was thrown out at the plate before Owen Hull lined out to center to end the inning.Bowling Green capitalized in the bottom half. Automatic runner Nicandro Aybar moved to third on Gonzalez’s sacrifice bunt after Carlos Colmenarez drew a walk. Diaz then lined a single to center, scoring Aybar and handing Greenville its second consecutive walk-off defeat.Greenville collected seven hits but finished just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven runners. The Drive pitching staff struck out 13 Hot Rods while holding Bowling Green to just one hit in 12 opportunities with runners in scoring position.Nixon was charged with the loss despite allowing no earned runs
