Concerns have notably been raised about the defensive end, but Lakers insider Jovan Buha pointed to injuries when asked about his biggest worry for the team on Buha’s Block.“My biggest worry is health,” Buha said. “Looking at Luka [Doncic], Austin [Reaves], and Walker Kessler, that has not been the most durable trio over the past two or three years. So that would be my biggest concern. Just can the Lakers get ideally 70-ish games out of each of those three guys? 65-plus games out of each of those three guys.“If so, I think they should be in the mix for home-court, 50-plus wins,” Buha added. “So, health is the biggest thing.”The Lakers failed to achieve their goals for the 2025-26 season partly due to injuries.Luka Doncic suffered a grade 2 left hamstring strain on April 2 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, and missed the rest of the regular season and the playoffs. Doncic ended up playing 64 games last season, after playing 50 in the one before, so health is certainly a concern. The Slovenian averaged 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 8.3 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in 2025-26, and it is paramount that he stays upright.The Lakers also lost Austin Reaves to a grade 2 left oblique strain on April 2, but he was able to return during the playoffs. Now Reaves notably missed significant time earlier in the campaign as well with a grade 2 left calf strain and ended up playing just 51 games.With LeBron James departing for the Philadelphia 76ers this summer, Reaves is the Lakers’ undisputed second option. They’ll struggle a bit if he misses 30+ games again. Reaves, who averaged 23.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in 2025-26, had stayed relatively injury-free in the past, so the hope would be that last season was an aberration.Lastly, we get to Walker Kessler, the new member of the Lakers’ Big 3. They went all-out for Kessler this offseason, giving up two first-round picks and two first-round pick swaps to the Utah Jazz.The Lakers also gave Kessler a massive four-year, $130 million deal as part of a sign-and-trade. They needed a defensive anchor and made sure they got one.Kessler only played five games for the Jazz last season, though. He put up solid averages of 14.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.8 blocks per game, but then needed season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.Kessler has eased concerns regarding his shoulder, saying it feels better than ever. He was a bit banged up in 2024-25 too, though, playing just 58 games, so he is another one the Lakers would be hoping the injury big stays away from.If Doncic, Reaves, and Kessler end up playing just 50-odd games, the Lakers could well prove to be the most disappointing team next season, as ESPN’s insiders project them to be.
