​Riley Herbst was diagnosed with a concussion stemming from a crash in the Dollar Tree 301 at New Hampshire two weeks ago. The driver of the No. 35 was sidelined for the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona due to the injury last week and was replaced by Harrison Burton.This week, Herbst confirmed that it was a concussion that kept him out of last week’s NASCAR Cup Series race. However, the 23XI Racing driver said he is 100 percent healthy following the injury and has been cleared to get back behind the wheel. Riley Herbst on concussion diagnosisDespite getting a concussion in a wreck at New Hampshire, Herbst passed concussion protocol throughout the week and qualified for the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona last Friday.Yet, when the 27-year-old woke up on Saturday morning for race day, he felt unwell. Herbst told reporters this week at Darlington that it was the worst he had felt all week. “I passed all my tests the week leading up to Daytona. Obviously, I qualified in the race car, and had really fast speed, and then I woke up Saturday morning, feeling really, really rough with trouble with all the symptoms, the worst I’ve had since the wreck,” Herbst said. Herbst, who was already eliminated from Chase contention, felt it was best to step aside at Daytona and wait until he was healthy.Ahead of Sunday night’s Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington, Herbst is ready to get back at it. “I thought it was the best idea for me to step out and let Harrison drive the race car, but back to being 100 percent,” Herbst said. Burton, a former Cup Series winner at Daytona, finished 12th in Saturday’s Coke Zero Sugar 400. His first and only Cup win came into the 2024 Coke Zero Sugar 400, driving the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford.Riley Herbst moving to Legacy Motor Club in 2027While the concussion sidelined Herbst last week at Daytona, the Las Vegas native had some positive news this week. On Wednesday, it was announced Herbst will field the No. 84 Legacy Motor Club Toyota in 2027.In a statement released by the team, Herbst expressed how he believes the career move is going to take him to the next level.“My first two seasons in the Cup Series have taught me a great deal,” Herbst said. “Every driver goes through a learning curve, and the move to Legacy Motor Club is another step forward in that process. There is still plenty ahead of me, and I’m looking forward to taking it on.”Herbst is being replaced by Corey Heim in the No. 35 23XI Racing Toyota next year. Meanwhile, LMC is expanding its team to three full-time cars, opening the door for Herbst.
