But this one hurt a bit more for the Raymond Rockets.”We didn’t play well,” Raymond manager Butch Steen said. “That’s the main thing.”The Watertown Red Devils beat Raymond 8-2 Saturday afternoon at the Mini Met. It eliminated the Rockets from the 103rd annual state amateur baseball tournament and means Raymond’s season ends in the state Class B quarterfinals.”I thought we had a chance to win it,” said Steen, 82. “But that’s how it goes.”Raymond led 1-0 through five innings. Rockets right-hander Ian Koosman, the Creighton University pitcher, was cruising, having allowed one hit to that point on 51 pitches. Veteran catcher Tyler Steen had gotten the Rockets the lead with a two-out RBI single, scoring Koosman, who doubled, in the first inning.Then came the sixth inning. If you were a Raymond Rocket fan, it was rough.Watertown (24-10-1) plated six runs on four hits, two walks, a hit-by-pitch and an error.There were a couple pitches called balls that the Rockets thought were close enough to be called strikes.Raymond (22-7-1) got a two-out single to right by Brett Swanson in the bottom of the sixth.The Red Devils then got two more runs in the seventh to put it out of reach on what could best be described as a Little League home run.With one out and a runner on first, the Red Devils’ Ryan Hangartner hit a ball to the left side of the infield. Raymond first baseman Mike Jeseritz thought he had it, but the ball left his glove and rolled into right field. By the time he realized it, Jaren Vogt had scored and Hangartner was rounding second. Right fielder Eli Nelson then threw it away, allowing Hangartner to score.”We’re all friends off the field and have each other’s backs on the field,” said Watertown designated hitter Jordan Berrios, whose two-run single in the sixth was one of the key blows.Raymond left eight runners on base, leaving a couple runners on base in the third on a tough called strike three on Tyler Steen. In the fourth, Noah Kloss grounded out into a double play with the bases loaded to end that threat. The Rockets also left the bases loaded in the sixth when they were trying to get back into the game.”We weren’t coming through in the clutch,” Butch Steen said. “Somebody’s gotta drive somebody in.”We didn’t really hit the ball real hard. We had (10) hits, but we kind of just had a lot of bleeders.”Watertown plays Jordan at 2 p.m. Sunday in New Prague.The championship game is set for 1 p.m. Monday in Shakopee. Jordan beat Sobieski 3-1. Also Saturday, Delano defeated St. Martin 5-1 and Plato blanked the Cold Spring Springers 6-0. Plato and Dealno play at 11 a.m. Sunday in Shakopee.
