​It was the 2024 Washington Commanders draft.The Commanders had just used their fifth-round selection (139) on Temple linebacker Jordan Magee. The Commanders’ front office and coaches were happy about the selection of Magee. It was revealed that the front office was in consensus that if Magee was available, they wanted to select him.The 6-foot-1, 228-pound linebacker was athletic, and the Commanders thought he had a high ceiling in front of him for more development. Why did the Commanders feel this way? Well, for starters, Magee had scored a 9.60 Relative Athletic Score (RAS) out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 117th out of 2889 LB from 1987 to 2024.So, why was Magee still available in round five of the draft? It seems, though, that Magee moved extremely well; his block-shedding and his ability to get rid of engaged linemen were very noticeable. Magee had played quarterback in high school and was late getting to the linebacker position. Thus, he was at Temple, not exactly Penn State, Alabama, or Ohio State.Fast forward to Sept. 7, 2026. Magee is now 25, entering his third NFL season. How has Magee’s development been? In his rookie season, he injured his knee in training camp, which limited him to eight games. In his second season in 2025, the question was asked whether Magee was in the doghouse. He was healthy, yet appeared very sparingly in each of the first six weeks of the season. Magee’s role then increased over the final half of the season.Yet, in preparing for 2026, the Commanders signed free agent inside linebacker Leo Chenal (Chiefs) and drafted inside linebacker Sonny Styles (Ohio State) seventh overall. The Commanders will, however, be using Magee on their special teams units. He made the 53-man roster, so they have not given up on Magee contributing as a Commander. Yet, how can it be argued that the Commanders have certainly moved in a different direction with their two linebacker acquisitions this offseason?
