On Monday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced their team captains for the 2026 season.The players voted for a total of six teammates to receive the honor of captaincy. The Bucs’ six captains this year will be quarterback Baker Mayfield, tackle Tristan Wirfs, defensive tackle Vita Vea, safety Antoine Winfield Jr., wide receiver Chris Godwin Jr., and linebacker Alex Anzalone.The foursome of Mayfield, Wirfs, Vea, and Winfield all served as captains for the Buccaneers last season. Godwin was a captain for the team back in 2023.Anzalone is set to begin his first season in Tampa. The veteran has already made a terrific impression on his new team, as evidenced by his selection. Anzalone has filled the leadership void left by franchise legend Lavonte David, who retired this offseason after spending 14 seasons as a Buccaneer. Outstanding rookie linebacker Josiah Trotter, Tampa’s second-round pick, has been mentored by Anzalone and has spoken about the chemistry the pair has built over the offseason.The 31-year-old Anzalone has spent the last five seasons with the Detroit Lions, where he was named a captain each year.Anzalone and Godwin are replacing the retired David and Mike Evans, who left the Bucs in free agency for the San Francisco 49ers. Evans had been a captain for Tampa in each of the last nine seasons, while David was given the honor in 12 of his 14 years with the team.This will be the fifth straight year that Vea is a captain for the Bucs. Mayfield, Wirfs, and Winfield are all wearing the “C” for the fourth time.Final ThoughtsIt’s nice to see Mayfield and Vea continue in their roles as captains after both had a very turbulent offseason with the organization.Godwin has taken over for Evans as the veteran leader of Tampa’s wide receiver room. He has embraced more of a leadership role this offseason without Evans and is now a team captain once again.It is a terrific honor for Anzalone to receive a captaincy in his first season with the Bucs and is a testament to the immediate impact his presence has brought to the organization.The Bucs begin the regular season on the road Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Tampa is looking to erase the memory of last year’s late-season collapse.There is enormous pressure on the players and head coach Todd Bowles to return to the playoffs this season.Now we know the players who the team has chosen to lead the march.
