​Rarely forthcoming, at least consistently, with updates on unavailable players, Oregon football coach Dan Lanning provided a pair of key updates to injured skill players Sept. 7 ahead of the Ducks’ (1-0) game against Oklahoma State this weekend.The fifth-year coach said freshman wideout Jalen Lott, a five-star prospect in the 2026 class, will be “down just for a little bit,” after getting a minor corrective surgery on his hand earlier this fall. He recognized that there were plenty of coaching moments throughout, and also defended another of his player’s from outside scrutiny after a shaky first week performance. Starting cornerback Carl Williams IV, a transfer from Baylor, gave up Oregon’s first touchdown of the season on what Lanning called a busted coverage, but several online pundits said was Williams’ mistake. “I know everybody’s picking on the touchdown play for Carl,” Lanning said. “It’s really not Carl’s mistake on that play. The coverage was executed wrong, so it’s easy to like look at one play as a fan and say, ‘Okay, this isn’t right,’ and it’s not at all correct. So, congrats.”Lanning also mentioned freshman Davon Benjamin Jr., who rotated in with Williams throughout the game defending the slot, “had some positive moments.” “He’s a guy that can play winning football and that’s why he was out there for us,” Lanning said.
