​Florida State football took on SMU in an ACC showdown at Doak Campbell on Labor Day. The game was delayed due to a power outage that lasted over an hour and a half. When the contest finally began, the Seminoles’ offense got off to a good start, but it stalled as the game went on. Here’s what went well and not very well for the Seminoles offensively. What the offense did wellEarlier in the first quarter, FSU quarterback Ashton Daniels drove them down the field and got an eight-yard rushing touchdown to eventually tie the game at seven. His athleticism was displayed throughout the night.FSU was able to extend plays with Daniels ‘ legs, constantly escaping the pocket and trying to make something out of nothing, and it worked for the time being. The read-option was also effective in the run game, with Daniels keeping the ball on occasion and leaving the defense on its heels. It was the same thing for their running backs, as SMU’s defense keyed on Daniels keeping the ball, which allowed the running backs to flourish, getting yards up the middle.Running back Ousmane Kromah was a major factor in what their offense thrived on. Kromah rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.What didn’t go well for the offenseThe Seminoles’ offense had a lot of miscues. The offensive line struggled against SMU’s pass rush quite a bit, as Daniels was sacked three times on the night. FSU was also ineffective on third down.At one point in the matchup during the fourth quarter, they were 0/10 on third down until they finally converted with about 10 minutes left in the game. They operated from third and medium a lot but were still unable to convert consistently. The fans even booed occasionally because the offense stalled on numerous drives. They ended the contest at The passing game was futile at times. Daniels went 12 of 23 for 125 yards and a touchdown.On the very last drive, to tie the game at 27 with a field goal to go into overtime or even win outright, the offense had three straight incompletions.Final thoughtsAlthough FSU’s offense didn’t play that great of a game overall, they were still able to rally and get back into it. They even had zero turnovers. But even with that, the bad outweighed the good for the most part. The grade for their offensive unit is a C-. They have to do better as a group, especially in pass protection and being consistent on third down. Their failure to convert prevented potential points from being on the board, which contributed to them being behind. FSU lost the game 27-24, leaving their record at 1-1. They’ll have a bye week and then play Alabama on September 19th.
