It only made sense: Surtain was the undisputed best cornerback in the league, and the Denver Broncos cornerback is one of the few defensive backs to win the Defensive Player of the Year. His four-year, $96 million contract extension back in September of 2024 felt fair at the time.Now, that contract looks more and more like a steal. As always, the market for the top stars only ballooned after Surtain signed his deal. The latest top cornerback to earn a massive payday is New England Patriots DB Christian Gonzalez, who got a four-year deal worth $135 million from his team. Surtain’s extension with the Broncos in 2024 is now just ranked seventh in the league, behind other star corners like Devon Witherspoon, Trent McDuffie, and Sauce Gardner.How does Surtain feel about the sudden boom in cornerback contracts? Well, the Broncos cornerback said that this is just what happens nowadays. Regardless, he says that Gonzalez’ contract extension was well-deserved. And  he’s one of those guys that I definitely look at and watch film on. It’s well-deserved. So, congrats to him. But when that time comes, that time comes. But right now I can only control what I can control, and that’s being the best version of myself on the field.”Surtain’s contract extension starts this year, which means that the Broncos will have at least two more years before they have to start talking about a new extension for their cornerback. Surtain will enter his age-30 when he hits free agency again, which could make contract negotiations tricky.
