​With Week 1 of the NFL season, it’s hard to know what’ll happen in a game or how a player will perform. All we can go off of is what the player did last season, what the team improved upon during the offseason, and how preseason/training camp has gone. For the New Orleans Saints, offseason additions are the biggest factor in predicting what could happen in Week 1. Knowing that year 2 of the Kellen Moore regime was the perfect time to take that next step, potentially setting up year 3 as a playoff year, the Saints did not waste time making the needed moves. There really isn’t a hole on the offense anymore, even if some improvements can still be made. The defense has many talented players sprinkled throughout, and the veteran leadership is strong. Again, this is just on paper, and we don’t know how it will actually look in the regular season, but this is a great start. So, with the improvements and potential of the Saints in mind, here are three predictions for New Orleans’ Week 1 matchup against the Detroit Lions. WR Barion Brown Gets His First Career TouchdownThis is a bit of a two-part prediction, but the main one is that former LSU Tiger and Saints rookie WR Barion Brown will get his offical first career touchdown in the NFL. Brown will be WR3 for at least this week’s game, and in Kellen Moore’s offense, he could be a highly utilized weapon. This could be on handoffs, on screens, or as a deep ball threat. Where I think the touchdown will happen is on a deep pass. The Lions’ safety group is depleted due to injuries, and with the expected focus set on Chris Olave and Travis Etienne, Moore may be able to expose that. It unlocks the potential for deep passes to Brown. The Saints Do Not Let Up a SackMy second prediction is a little bit of a long shot. The Saints made the major addition of David Edwards at LG, but the rest of the offensive line is returning players. This group is really good, but even with its potential, not letting up a sack with Aiden Hutchinson lining up on the opposing defensive line is a tall task. Still, I think the Saints can do it. It’s also important for Tyler Shough to get the ball out faster and escape the pocket away from potential pressure. Jonas Sanker Gets His First Interception of the SeasonFor my last prediction, I have second-year safety and new slot corner Jonas Sanker getting his first interception of the year. Sanker’s move to slot has been a major one for this defense after Alontae Taylor left in free agency. The Saints had the chance to find a player who has played slot corner before, but they believed in Sanker.Sanker had some mistakes last season, but for the most part, he was one of the most important players on defense. Somehow, someway, I would not be surprised if he ends up getting an interception on Sunday.
