Farke explains why defender was forced off against ChelseaDaniel Farke defended his decision to rotate his Leeds side after they surrendered a two-goal lead in a 6-3 Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea – and eased injury worries over defender Melvin Bard.Leeds looked in control of the tie before Chelsea fought back, with Farke admitting the quickfire nature of the hosts’ first two goals changed the momentum of the contest.“Some of our key players who have played many, many minutes should have got some rest today, that was the scenario,” Farke explained.“Also for our players who didn’t have the chance in the last weeks and months to get many minutes, they should have a proper amount of minutes today.”Farke felt there had been few warning signs before Chelsea’s comeback began, with the Blues scoring from the penalty spot before quickly drawing level.“I didn’t really see the penalty coming and then two minutes later they scored the 2-2, more or less,” he said. “There was nothing in the air to smell it.“After that they more or less turned the game and we were in need, of course. We had to take risks to bring some of our most important players like Dominic Calvert-Lewin, like Noah Okafor, Anton Stach.”Farke had planned to introduce Jean-Mattéo Bahoya as Leeds chased the game. But the Leeds boss explained that he had to take Melvin Bard off, though explained it was just due to cramp and not a serious injury.“In the last 20 minutes I wanted to go even more risky and bring Jean-Mattéo on but sadly Melvin Bard gave me the sign that he couldn’t go further on because he had cramps and Jean-Mattéo is not a left-back.“I had to bring Gabriel Gudmundsson on.”
