Later at the same venue, a Matty Rippon hat-trick helped Oban Camanachd’s second team Lochside Rovers clinch the HIS Sutherland Cup for shinty’s national reserve championship with a 5-4 win over KInlochshiel’s second string after extra time.Newtonmore captain Iain Robinson opened early, and into the second half Matthew Sloss made it 2-0. Ewen Campbell brought the score back to 2-1 but the leaders stretched away with a goal from Struan Ross and a second from Sloss.Oban Camanachd struck first on the half hour through Kyle MacFarlane and it was well into the second half before Fraser Munro drew Kingussie level. Ruaridh Anderson and Roddy Young then struck to allow Kingussie to atone for their loss to Camanachd in the Macaulay final three weeks previously.A Gavin McLaughlan hat-trick and an Ali Taylor double did the job for Cabers, with Kyles’ Ross MacRae briefly making it 3-1.Newtonmore, with two to play, are on 31 points ahead of Kingussie on 25 and with four games remaining. The top two still have to play each other on 10 October and Kingussie have a better goal difference by six. With four matches remaining, Kyles are five points and 57 goals adrift of safety.Alfie MacLeod opened early for Glenurquhart but Alan MacDonald soon equalised for Inveraray. This seemed to annoy Glen and MacLeod restored their lead before Daniel MacLean grabbed a hat-trick in nine minutes and MacLeod completed his to make the half time score 6-1. A fourth from MacLean and a late strike from Neale Reid ensured that Glen’s return to the top flight is as National Division champions.This also rendered Lovat’s 2-0 victory at Kilmallie academic.A flurry of early cup final goals began with an opener from Kinlochshiel’s Jay MacRae. Daniel Duffy equalised and a minute later Seamus Martin edged Shiel ahead again. Duncan Hunt made it all square before half time and Matt Rippon put Rovers ahead for the first time early in the second half. They held that lead until the sixth minute of stoppage time when Duncan MacMillan sent the final into extra time at the last gasp. MacMillan also put Shiel briefly back in front before Rippon made it 4-4 and then clinched it two minutes from the end of stoppage time.Rovers add this national trophy to Oban Camanachd’s first team Macaulay Cup triumph three weeks previously.
