​Pedro Neto recently signed a new Chelsea contract.Pedro Neto seems to have approved of his current role at Chelsea after uncertainty over his future at Stamford Bridge earlier this summer.The 26-year-old was among the few players whom Chelsea were open to selling in the summer, albeit not actively trying to offload.The Blues set a hefty asking price, something close to £100 million, with several clubs, including Manchester City and Saudi side Al-Hilal, showing interest in the winger during the summer transfer window.In the end, Neto stays at Chelsea. He has even committed his future by signing an improved deal, which ties him to the club until the summer of 2032.From a footballing perspective, it might have seemed a strange decision for a winger to agree to a new contract amid questions over wingers’ fate at Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea.Jamie Gittens, Geovany Quenda, and, to a lesser extent, Estevao have all struggled to get minutes this season, as Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 primary formation uses two number 10s rather than wide forwards.However, Neto is not your typical winger. He is impressively versatile and, based on his recent comments, does not mind playing deeper in a wing-back role.“I don’t like to concede that many goals,” the Portugal international told Sky Sports after the 6-3 win over Leeds United last week.“We like to score six, but to concede three is not a thing we want to do in a lot of games.”Neto’s former Wolves teammate Conor Coady, in the Sky studio, teased him for the comment: “When have you ever worried about conceding goals?”Neto responded: “Me, now that I’m a wing-back, lad.”Self-professed wing-backSince joining Chelsea from Wolves on a £54m deal two years ago, Neto has played so many roles for the team. He is primarily a left-footed right winger, which is common, but he has also played as a left winger, a false nine, and now a wing-back.Adapting to the wing-back role is likely not a big jump for him, too, given his skill set.Alonso even argued that he does not necessarily see Neto as a wing-back.“For me, he’s a winger,” Alonso explained at last Friday’s press conference.“You can call him a winger or a wing-back. He can play on the last line and defend on the first line. He can do many things. He is good one-v-one, scoring goals, and has a fantastic work rate. “I knew him well from watching many games of Chelsea. With him, you know he’s going to compete, and we want those types of players in our team.”Obviously, it is unfair to expect other wingers to agree to play as a wing-back as easily.Neto has always been a wide player who thrives in space and relies heavily on his pace to drive with the ball.
