The Syracuse Orange football team followed up a tough 21-18 loss against Cal in Week 2 with another disappointing performance in Week 3.The Orange were beaten 27-13 by the Pitt Panthers in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play. With the loss, Fran Brown’s team is now 1-2 on the season and 0-2 within the league. As Syracuse hits the bye week next week, there are more questions than answers. Here’s what you need to know, in no particular order.Quarterback Steve Angeli struggles, gets benchedAfter a three-interception performance against Cal last week, the SU signal-caller struggled once again, going 13-of-25 for 161 yards and two more interceptions, both of which came in the second half.Furthermore, he missed a touchdown pass to Umari Hatcher in the second half, leaving an underthrown ball to be knocked away by the defensive back.Angeli was benched in the fourth quarter in favor of Amari Odom, and now there is a quarterback concern in Central New York. How did Odom look?Odom looked in command of the offense, though it’s hard to fully evaluate given that the game was out of mostly hand when he got into it. Trailing 27-10, Odom went 7-of-7 for 44 yards. He also ran for two and led the Orange to a field goal. The transfer from Kennesaw State will be in the mix to start when the Orange come out of the bye week.Red zone woesSyracuse trailed 17-0 in the second quarter but came back to make it 17-10 at the half. That said, there were issues in the red zone for Brown’s team. With the score 17-0, the Orange failed to score on four plays inside the five-yard line. They were bailed out by a pass interference call on fourth down and weren’t able to score a touchdown until third down of the fresh set of downs. They’ll have to be better moving forward.Kicker changeTripp Woody missed two field goals in the loss to Cal and he missed his first kick in this game, causing Brown to turn to freshman Shay Barker, who went 2-of-2 on field goals and 1-of-1 on extra points.Rushing successTylik Hill didn’t play after injuring his quad in Week 2, but the Orange got great contributions in the rush game from Ahmad Miller (78 yards on 14 carries). The team rushed for 142 yards in total, but they only averaged 3.7 yards per carry. Shavane Anderson Jr., who was the ACC Rookie of the Week in Week 1, had just 26 yards on 11 carries.Syracuse Orange running back Ahmad Miller (22) scores a touchdown during the second quarter against the Pittsburgh Panthers at Acrisure Stadium. Charles LeClaire-Imagn ImagesNo Calvin Russell Well, we heard earlier this week that Russell would be activated for Oct. 3’s game against UConn, but then all of a sudden he was questionable before the game started here. He ultimately didn’t play, but we expect to see him in two weeks.
