Backup wideouts getting opportunityWith a backbreaking injury to one of OU football’s star wide receivers, a few depth pieces will have the opportunity to claim a starting role before the start of SEC play. When the Sooners take on New Mexico in Norman at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, they will be without transfer wide receiver Trell Harris, who OU coach Brent Venables said is out “for the foreseeable future” after taking a hard hit in last week’s Michigan loss. That’s a big blow to the Sooners’ receiving corps with Harris’ abilities to compliment star wideout Isaiah Sategna III.This will allow players like Parker Livingstone, Elijah Thomas, Mackenzie Alleyne and Manny Choice a chance to carve out the role Harris leaves behind as he hits the injured list.Choice, a sophomore wideout, is the listed backup of Harris’ on the depth chart at the wide receiver Z position, however Choice hasn’t found the field much in the first two games.Livingstone and Thomas have been competing for the third wideout starting spot and could be the two that start next to Sategna against the Lobos.Alleyne is also a candidate because of his touchdown catch Saturday against Michigan, his lone catch on the 22-yarder.OU has a few options at replacing Harris, but could also run more 12 and 13-personnel sets as the Sooners also try to establish the run.A run game, maybe? The Sooners need to find that elusive run game in order to find similar success from a season ago. It’s incredibly important for Saturday to be a clean operation from the offense with No. 2 Georgia and No. 1 Texas on the horizon following the game against New Mexico. In OU’s game against Michigan, the Sooners ran the ball 13 times with their running backs. That seemingly is a recipe for disaster from the Sooners, especially praising the revamped run game all offseason.Part of that had to do with OU’s offensive line that’s been shuffling the past few weeks due to key injuries. However, the Sooners were only missing left tackle Michael Fasusi for the game.Another key part in the inability to run the ball was the play calling against it. OU offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle seemingly shied away from calling run plays for the Sooners against Michigan and said after the game he needs to continue to run the ball. This game Saturday is a perfect opportunity to find that run game before the daunting start of SEC play. Can the defense bring more pressure on the QB?The Sooners’ defense did enough to win the game last week in Ann Arbor, however there were a few areas where it can improve.OU’s had trouble getting pressure on the quarterback in key situations like 3rd-down scenarios. The Sooners have been excellent in creating pressure the past few seasons, especially when it’s 3rd down.Getting those key stops can help out a struggling offense and keep the ball in the hands of the Sooners.Another key point for the Sooners to clean up is the missed tackles they
