With Clarke Schmidt being activated off the 60-day IL as he returns from Tommy John surgery, the Yankees are creating room on the 40-man roster by designating utility player Oswaldo Cabrera for assignment.Cabrera was then claimed by the Cincinnati Reds, ending his time with the Yankee organization after five seasons in The Bronx.Cabrera played just three games for the Yanks this season as he spent the majority of the year with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre, where he was hitting .288/.345/.444 in 122 games while getting starts at all four infield positions and both corner outfield spots. The 27-year-old appeared in 304 games at the big league level, posting a .232/.292/.343 slash line for a .635 OPS. In 15 postseason games, Cabrera tallied three hits in 34 at-bats with a .420 OPS.As for Schmidt, he has been out since July 3 of last season, when he was diagnosed with a torn UCL that required Tommy John surgery that also included an internal brace procedure.Schmidt had a 3.32 ERA (3.95 FIP) and 1.09 WHIP in 14 starts last season before going down with his injury. In another notable move on Wednesday, hard-throwing pitching prospect Carlos Lagrange was activated off the IL in Triple-A.Lagrange, who had been dealing with a right shoulder sprain, last pitched on June 28.
