   ​AUBURN, Ala. − Florida football showed an ability to overcome adversity in its SEC opening win at Auburn.The Florida Gators (3-0, 1-0 SEC) bounced back from an early turnover and were flagged 16 times but still found a way to win on the road before 88.,043 at Jordan-Hare Stadium.”No bad wins,” Florida football coach Jon Sumrall said. “Always good to win. We still have a lot to improve upon. That’s not our best football. We’re going to get there. So much to work on to improve.”Sumrall has guided UF to its first 3-0 start since 2019 and is UF’s first first-year coach to start 3-0 since Jim McElwain in 2015.”We made responses,” Sumrall said. “I don’t know that we played really clean, but we responded in some big moments where you had to go make a play.”Here’s what Florida learned in its SEC opening win over the Auburn Tigers.Florida football QB Aaron Philo can handle playing on road in the SECThe 6-foot-1, 207-pound Philo improved to 3-0 as a starter and showed poise in a hostile environment in leading UF to a road win over the Tigers. Philo completed 15 of 22 passes with one TD and an interception that bounced off the hands of Florida running back Jadan Baugh,Philo’s 37-yard throw for Venrell Brown III to start the third quarter sparked a three-play, 75-yard TD drive to put Florida up 27-17. Later in the third quarter, Philo threw his lone TD pass, a 20-yard strike to Dallas Wilson that extended UF’s lead to 34-17.Philo led a balanced effort at UF finished with 252 yards passing and 243 yards rushing.”I knew that we were extremely explosive offensively,” Philo said. “We stopped ourselves a lot tonight, and when we go back and clean it up, I think we’re gonna be better.”Florida fans that made the trip chanted Philo’s name postgame as he headed for the tunnel.”It’s pretty cool,” Philo said. “I can’t let it get to me too much. I can’t get complacent at all. Gotta go back, watch film and get better. But definitely appreciate the love.”Florida football defense remains inconsistentFlorida’s defense finished with seven sacks and forced two takeaways against Auburn. But UF also surrendered 373 yards and 39 points against the Tigers. Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown passed for 271 yards and 3 TDs, including a 35-yard TD pass to receiver Chas Nimrod on fourth down with 24 seconds left that cut UF’s lead to 44-39.”Until we are so on point with everybody doing their job all the time, we’re going to give up stupid explosive plays like we did the night that were not necessary,” Sumrall said. “And they made, credit to them, they made some plays. But like, there’s a couple of them out there that we just decided to give them a gift. And that’s not what good football teams do.”A bright spot on defense was defensive lineman Emmanuel Oyebadejo, a game-time decision who came back from a leg injury to record 2.5 sacks.
