​LONDON, England — Kansas football’s injury issues at running back came up again Saturday, amid a 24-17 loss overseas in London against Arizona State.KU already knew it would be going through the season without running back Justin Thurman, out due to injury. Then, in the week leading up to the season opener against LIU, head coach Lance Leipold shared running back Kory Amachree would be missing an extended period of time. And then running back Yasin Willis isn’t able to finish the game against ASU.For a group with so much promise within associate head coach Andy Kotelnicki’s offense, now Leipold is talking about how he’s “extremely” concerned with the depth at the position there. For a Jayhawks offense that wants to be able to run the ball and play complementary football, it’s becoming harder and harder to do that. And postgame Leipold was not able to share much on Willis’ status.RELATED: LB Quincy Davis is stepping up for KU football, and that has to continue“I’m not sure, I just thought he’s out for the day, not how long he’s going to be out,” Leipold said about Willis. “But, yeah, it’s highly concerning right now.”Leipold, asked about what he can do to mitigate the situation at running back, noted: “Look at the waiver wire? I don’t know. We had some guys — Jalen Dupree hasn’t been healthy, got nicked up in practice the other day. He wasn’t really available to do much the last four days of practice. Micah Johnson’s there. We’re down guys there right now, can’t do much about it, but we have to be creative and see where it takes us. But, yeah, I would be misleading if I didn’t say it was a concern right now.”It’s not just running back where injuries are popping up, with Leipold pointing to tight end and how Carson Bruhn didn’t play against ASU and Carter Moses got hurt. Overall, the team is a bit banged up right now and needs the open week that’s coming to help it get healthier. But there does seem to be a heightened focus on what’s happening at running back.KU still has running back Dylan Edwards, and outside of a fumble Edwards played well against Arizona State. Edwards rushed for 89 yards on 18 attempts, and caught four passes for 16 yards. The team’s goal is to get the ball in his hands more often, and take advantage of how electric of a player he can be.But it appeared that there would be a leading duo of Edwards and Willis this fall at that position, with those like Dupree, Amachree and more providing depth behind them. Depending on how long Willis and Dupree are limited, KU (1-2, 0-1 in Big 12 Conference) will need to be able to adapt.
